The Writing World of
Ruth Hanna Sachs
My Books
Fiction
Stories I Heard While Listening. Short stories offer a quick glimpse of life, a peek backstage at the actors without makeup and costumes. This collection of stories eavesdrops on Psyche and Cupid, Rivka and Rafael, and Ruth's own next-door neighbors and colleagues. You will identify with these people who briefly allow you into their hearts, people who for one moment tell you what they really feel. Click here to order.

The Generation. Sci-fi letter novel. As the story opens, the reader gets to know Joanie Goldstern shortly before her 18th birthday on September 13, 1996. Her letters are introduced by Mrs. Sarah Spielberg and Dr. Baruch at the Congress for Peace, in the year 4016. The novel leads the reader from a world set in the recent past, when peace in the Middle East briefly seemed attainable, to a future time and space when black and white no longer equal gray. This book will delight science fiction, fantasy, and political science readers alike! Click here to order.

Abandonment. Three-act play. After years of grousing about the poor quality of dramas available on the subject of German resistance in general, and White Rose resistance in particular, Ruth was challenged to write a play that would accurately - yet passionately - portray the group as they really were. The result: Abandonment. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpts on Google Books.

Brickmaker's Son. Three-act play about a teen-aged German-Jewish boy who comes to America in the 1800s, and his life and family in early 20th-century Houston. Lovingly told (I am a third generation Houstonian, after all!), this story is authentic in every aspect. From the music to the dances, to Dr. Pepper and Jim Crow, Brickmaker's Son celebrates the best and worst of life as an immigrant. Click here to order.

Changing Seasons. Book of poetry breathing life into the changing seasons of our days. From baby's breath and springtime blossoms to winter chill, cycling into spring once again, the rhythm of growing up is captured in eloquent words. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpts on Google Books.

White Rose

Histories
White Rose History, Volume I: Coming Together (January 1933 - April 30, 1942). The Unfinished Story. From teen years to coalescing of group in Munich. This compelling volume combines an overview of Hitler's rise to power and increasingly harsh and anti-Semitic measures, with the reactions of the teenagers who later banded together to say NO! Can be ordered in regular edition for younger readers or casual history fans, or academic version for the serious historian. Click here to read excerpt on Google Books.

White Rose History, Volume II: Journey to Freedom (May 1, 1942 - October 12, 1943). The Unfinished Story. Resistance activities of the friends known as the White Rose, from their decision to produce leaflets to their executions. Exciting story with NOTHING fictionalized. Explores what made them choose the leaflet method, who participated in the inner workings of the group, who helped with "errands" and such, and who supported from the fringe. Can be ordered in regular edition for younger readers or casual history fans, or academic version for the serious historian. Click here to read excerpt on Google Books.

White Rose History, Volume III: Fighters to the Very End (October 13, 1943 - May 9, 1945). The Roses who were not executed did not stop fighting. Two were killed for their continued resistance in 1945. One of those? Christoph Probst's father-in-law, Harald Dohrn. Release date: July 13, 2010. Can be ordered in regular edition for younger readers or casual history fans, or academic version for the serious historian.

Primary source materials
Alexander Schmorell: Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts. English translation of complete Schmorell transcripts, from the Russian National Military Archives. February - March 1943. "Schurik's" complete, uncensored interrogation transcripts shed new light on what the students of the White Rose did and thought. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

Buendische Trials (Scholl/Reden): 1937-1938. English translation of the transcripts of the arrest, interrogation, and trial of Hans and Werner Scholl, and Ernst Reden. November 1937-June 1938. This translation refutes the notion that Hans Scholl was arrested for smuggling currency and other minor "buendische" infractions. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

Friendships in the White Rose, by Lieselotte Ramdohr. English translation of Lilo Ramdohr's excellent memoirs. "Lilo" best captured the heart and soul of the group of friends now known as the White Rose. Courageously fearful (or fearfully courageous), she was not directly involved with their resistance work. But she allowed Schurik use of her apartment to store leftover leaflets and to design "seditious" graffiti templates. Click here to order.

Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts: Manfred Eickemeyer and Eugen Grimminger. English translation of ZC13267 Volume 7, surviving documentation for Manfred Eickemeyer and Eugen Grimminger. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpts on Google Books.

Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts: Graf, Schmorell (NJ 1704). English translation of Gestapo interrogation transcripts for Willi Graf and Alexander Schmorell, NJ 1704. This is my favorite out of all the Gestapo interrogation transcripts! Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts: Professor Kurt Huber and Falk Harnack. English translation of NJ1704 Volumes 2, 7, 9, and 13 for Kurt Huber and Falk Harnack, including interrogations, clemency proceedings, and (for Kurt Huber) execution documents. Of special interest: The manner in which the Gestapo played the two men against one another by taking excerpts from Huber's interrogations to try to rattle Harnack, and vice versa. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpts on Google Books.

Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts: Gisela Schertling and Katharina Schueddekopf. English translation of ZC13267 Volume 15 for Gisela Schertling and Katharina Schueddekopf. Fascinating juxtaposition of two women who could not have been more different. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

Gestapo Interrogation Transcripts: Scholl (ZC 13267). English translation of Gestapo interrogation transcripts for Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl, ZC 13267. This volume contains: Pre-arrest Gestapo memos, including psychoanalysis of 'suspect' carried out by Dr. Richard Harder; Indictment, trial "transcript" and verdict for the trial dated February 22, 1943; the saga of the Remington typewriter; Hans and Sophie Scholl interrogation transcripts; all seven leaflets; evidence submitted for trial; interrogations of related parties (e.g. Jakob Schmid); periodic Gestapo updates; miscellaneous correspondence, including M. Bormann's famous memorandum removing Hans Scholl and Christoph Probst from the armed forces so they could stand trial before Judge Freisler; pedantic Nazi legal correspondence; clemency and execution files for Hans and Sophie Scholl; trial expenses; and personal effects of Hans and Sophie Scholl. Click here to order.

Robert Mohr: Written Memorandum. Robert Mohr's February 19, 1951 "written memorandum" of his involvement in the White Rose case. Disturbing document that is a must-read for any White Rose scholar, or political scientists looking for a better way to handle de-Nazification (or de-Baathification). His self-serving words were accepted at face value... Click here to orderClick here to read excerpts on Google Books.

Third White Rose Trial. Report (indictment) and trial transcript, along with interrogation transcript of Josef Soehngen. This is the "forgotten" White Rose trial, which was to have been held on April 20, 1943 with four death sentences. But a loss of files containing evidence forced delay of the proceedings. At this trial, Gisela Schertling redeemed herself by recanting previous testimony against the defendants. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

Two Interviews: Hartnagel and Wittenstein (Annotated). Transcription of my April 30, 1995 interview with Hartnagels and interview with Wittenstein in January 2001. The "Protokolle" of these interviews were sent to the respective interviewee for transcription approval. Since recent books, interviews, and essays contradict some of the content of these two interviews, I felt it was important to get these documents out where other researchers could utilize them. If nothing else, a good tool in the historiography of White Rose scholarship and the ever-shifting sands of Scholl/Wittenstein words. Click here to orderClick here to read excerpt on Google Books.

White Rose Leaflets. All seven leaflets of the White Rose resistance movement in a small, keepsake booklet. These are words that will move you every time you read them. Amazing that young people had that much courage when days were so very dark. Click here to order.
